― Lady Stella speaking about an ancient prophecy Star Charmed
The Star Darlings, or SDs for short, are a group made up of twelve teenage girls who are the subjects of an ancient prophecy stating that the positive energy combined from them granting wishes would be powerful enough to save Starland. Currently those girls are students at Starling Academy, being formed by Lady Stella in order to find a way to solve the wish energy crisis, originally under the guise of being for experimental purposes.
History[]
Lady Stella’s Search[]
Before the group was officially formed, Lady Stella was searching for a way to solve a decrease in positive wish energy. Eventually, she discovered an ancient book detailing a prophecy in it’s pages, describing exactly twelve “Star-Charmed” young female Starlings with the ability to grant twelve unique wishes and garner incredible amounts of positive energy in the process. After bringing it up with the Head of Admissions, Lady Cordial, she began going through student applications and records at Starling Academy to find the ones who could fulfill the prophecy.
Arrival at Starling Academy[]

Lady Stella has finalized the members of her plan just in time for the first day of school at Starling Academy. During the orientation celebration, four girls—Sage, Cassie, Libby, and Gemma—take part as this is their first ever year at the school, while returning students Clover, Astra, Piper, Vega, Tessa, Adora, Leona, and Scarlet participate. On everyone’s Star-Zaps, they receive a message telling them what room to go to in order to get an introduction and overview of what to know.
All twelve of them get a unique message mentioning “Group SD” and telling them to head to the office of Lady Stella. Once they get there, the headmistress reveals to them that they’ve been selected for a confidential program, which involves sending young Starlings ahead of graduation on wish missions as they’d gain more wish energy from granting the wishes of young Wishlings. SD is also revealed to stand for ‘Star Darlings’. After that orientation day, their training begins.
Wish Missions and Mishaps[]
Main Articles: History from the Books, SD Wish Missions
After a long period of inactivity, Sage is the first one sent on her wish mission. From then on, the SDs are sent on missions smoothly, though before Libby goes on hers, odd flowers arrive in their dormitories that spread animosity between the girls. At the end of Libby's mission, Scarlet being a Star Darling is thought to have been a mistake, and she is removed from the team. Her place is then taken by Ophelia. Soon, Leona goes on her own mission, but her cuff malfunctions and breaks, making her unable to bring any of the positive energy with her despite granting two wishes and thus getting twice the amount.
By Scarlet’s mission, they’ve managed to get rid of the flowers. Although the mission was given to Ophelia, she was struggling so badly that Scarlet went to Wishworld to help her. They granted the wish, and the energy went to Scarlet, giving her a power crystal along with a wish blossom. In the process, it is revealed that Scarlet was a true Star Darling. Afterwards, Ophelia left the group.
Before Cassie goes on a mission, they all go on to put a nail polish party. Unbeknownst to them the polish was tainted with negative energy, making them all act in weird ways. Cassie herself gains confidence at the cost of her pleasantness, becoming rather obnoxious.
After Piper's mission is completed and Astra begins hers, the latter and Libby discover a way to remove the polish after suspecting it by using Wishworld's polish remover and bringing some back home. On the way through granting the wish, they stumble upon flowers of negative energy growing and blocking their way. They use their Power Crystals to get rid of them.
Tessa goes on her wish mission next, then Adora goes on hers. During the latter's wish mission, she accidentally reveals her identity as a Starling to her wisher. She and Cassie also find out their wish orbs were switched.

Powers and Abilities[]
- Wish Energy Manipulation: All Starlings are capable of harnessing the energy granted from wishes around them to perform a variety of feats. Some are naturally inclined towards this while others learn from much practice. The most common use of wish energy is telekinesis, which is taught at Starling Academy. In the series, this power is shown to have offensive, defensive, as well as supportive capabilities. Most Starlings channel Positive Wish Energy that usually has beneficial properties and is derived from good wishes. Some Starlings, like Lady Rancora, prefer to use Negative Wish Energy generated from bad wish orbs.
- Energy Blasts: As displayed in The Power of Twelve, wish energy can be used to fire streams, bursts, orbs, and waves of offensive power against opponents.
- Force Fields: Again displayed in the above special, shields can be manifested as defense.
- Healing: In The Power of Twelve, Adora attempts to heal Vega after being attacked by Rancora.
- Invisibility: Cassie utilizes wish energy to achieve this effect and confuse Rancora while attacking her in The Power of Twelve
- Super Speed: Astra is able to channel wish energy to achieve high speeds.
- Extended Lifespan: In Scarlet Discovers True Strength, it’s confirmed that Starlings can live for thousands of years, as Mira’s grandmother is over thousands of years old. Before that, in Leona's Unlucky Mission it was hinted that a few decades wasn’t too long in comparison to Starling lifespans. However, they do not have eternal youth, as Professor Elara Ursa is stated to be among one of the oldest wish granters and has clearly aged in a similar manner to a wishling elder.
- Disease Immunity: In Scarlet Discovers True Strength, it states that the wish energy surrounding Starlings keeps them from contracting illnesses.
- Superhuman Knowledge: In Leona's Unlucky Mission, Starlings are shown to be nigh-perfect at mathematics from birth. Astra's Mixed-Up Mission also implies that Starlings are the same way towards towards literature and similar subjects such as language and grammar.
- Mind Control: Young starlings have this ability when they head to Wishworld but it only works on adult wishlings.
- Wish Mission Signature Powers: The Star Darlings each gain a power that is meant to assist with carrying out their wish missions. It is unknown if this is exclusive to them, or if they only work on Wishworld, as Adora uses hers to heal Vega in the The Power of Twelve.
- Power Crystals: Each of the Star Darlings wields their own power crystal, a gemstone that can greatly boost their innate powers while being quite useful on their own. They appear inside their wish blossoms.

Trivia[]
- The Star Darlings' names are based off of the zodiac, which is a belt of the heavens within about 8° either side of the ecliptic, including all apparent positions of the sun, moon, and most familiar planets. It is divided into twelve equal divisions or signs (Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces).
- It is also possible Ophelia is named after Opicuchus, a 13th sign that in 2011 was being considered for a position in the main zodiac wheel. However, astrologers have confirmed that it isn't usually considered part of the zodiac astrologically. Astronomically, it is technically in the zodiac as the actual constellation is between Scorpio and Sagittarius.
- With this in mind, Astra, Leona, and Sage make up the three fire signs Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius. Tessa, Vega, and Clover make up the earth signs Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn. Gemma, Libby, and Adora make up air signs Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius. The water signs Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces are made up by Cassie, Scarlet, and Piper.
- The cardinal signs would be made up by Astra, Cassie, Libby, and Clover. The fixed signs would be made up by Leona, Scarlet, Adora, and Taurus. The mutable signs would be made up by Sage, Piper, Gemma, and Vega.
- Astrologically, Astra and Libby would be opposites, then Tessa and Scarlet, Gemma and Sage, Cassie and Clover, Leona and Adora, and then Vega and Piper.
- Various possible references to the zodiac signs can be seen in some of their designs.
- In animation and the books, Sage's hair is styled in two long braids instead of being fully let down. This may be meant to resemble arrows, as Sagittarius is an archer. In addition, purple is a color commonly attributed with Sagittarius.
- Libby's primarily pink design may be due to pink being associated often with Libra.
- Leona's hair is similar to a lion's mane, and Leo is depicted as a lion.
- Scarlet has the most black in her design, and black is traditionally associated with Scorpio.
- The color white is often tied to Cancer, and Cassie is designed with paler, whiter clothes. Her hairstyle also resembles Cancer's symbol, which is two crab hands.
- Piper's long ponytail and seafoam green color scheme may be from Pisces being two fishes and being associated with light green, respectively.
- Astra's red color scheme and the braids in front of her hair may reference Aries being associated with red and ram horns.
- Green is often associated with Taurus, and Tessa has a lot of green in her design.
- Blue is commonly associated with Aquarius, and Adora's color scheme has shades of sky blue.
- In a similar style to Astra, Capricorn is shown as a goat and Clover's braids may reference goat horns.
- Five of them are part of the band; Sage, Libby, Leona, Vega, and Scarlet.
- They receive the most promotion, screentime and merchandise out of all the SDs.
- They also make up the five points of a star.
- In the cartoon series, Cassie is the only one outside the band to speak regularly in episodes. Clover had a minor speaking role in a single episode, while Gemma had a small speaking role in one clip. Outside of that, no one else had a speaking role in the episodes until The Power Of Twelve.
- Sage, Leona, and Cassie tend to have star, sun, and moon related imagery respectively.
- The Wisher’s Guide to Starland sorts them all into these groups.
- The Competitive Ones: Ambitious and wanting to be the best at their passions. These are Leona, Astra, Adora, and Vega at singing, sports, fashion science, and everything respectively.
- The Independent Ones: Shy, withdrawn loners who’d like to interact with others better. These are Cassie and Scarlet.
- The Fun Ones: Always up for jokes, games, conversations, or any method of hanging out. These are Sage, Libby, Gemma, and Tessa.
- The Artistic Ones: Have an interest in art and love what they do. These are Clover and Piper with songwriting and poetry, respectively.
- At Starling Academy, their cover for their Star Darling training was a remedial class.
- Those who knew about the Star Darlings were Lady Stella, Lady Cordial, Margaret Dumarre, Dolores Raye, Illumia Wickes, Elara Ursa, Lucretia Delphinus, Eugenia Bright, Kiri Lillibelle, Ophelia, Indirra and Vivica.
