"Make up your mind to blaze like a comet!"
― Gemma's Mirror Mantra Gemma and the Ultimate Standoff
Gemma is one of the twelve main characters in the Star Darlings animated and book series. She is the main point of view for the twelfth Star Darlings book, Gemma and the Ultimate Standoff. She first appears in the episode Star Charmed and is voiced by Marieve Herington. Gemma's roommate at Starling Academy is Libby and her first Wisher on Wishworld is Zoey.
Story[]
History[]
Gemma is admired and hilarious, and she's also super chatty - always having a mouthful to say. She says anything and everything that pops into her head. There's never a moment of silence around Gemma. When she was younger, she even talked to farm animals because they were such great listeners.
Gemma loves her big sister, Tessa, but she wants to get out from under Tessa's glow since she tends to baby her little sister, so Gemma is always fighting for more independence. Everybody loves Tessa, so Gemma feels she has to be "on" all the time to stand out. Gemma wants everyone to like her, and if Gemma thinks someone doesn't, she stresses about it for days. The only time she's quiet is when she's drifting across a peaceful lake in a rowboat.
Appearance[]
Gemma’s theme colour is orange. She is a preteen girl with dark skin, orange eyes, lips, and hair held into mini ponytails. In the series, her hair is tied into pigtails. Her outfit consists of a yellow dress with an orange belt, orange-striped stockings, and sandals. Her accessories consist of gold bracelets on her wrists and her star-charmed earrings.
On Wishworld, Gemma’s appearance changes to look like a human. Her hair colour changes to black with only a streak of orange, her eyes go from orange to brown, and her skin loses its sparkle. Her outfit consists of an orange short-sleeved dress with golden flowers for its design and a pair of sandals to complete her look. The only item that remains the same is her star-charmed earrings.
Personality[]
Gemma is a cheerful girl full of energy and loves to make her friends laugh. She is friendly, carefree, extroverted, social and the definition of the class clown. She also knows a little bit about everything.
However, Gemma's sarcasm can offend others without her meaning to. Gemma needs to learn how to rein in her energy. Gemma also talks—a lot—and can be a little too honest sometimes and offend others. She has a short attention span and can be superficial.
Gemma's room[]

Gemma's room has a super-stellar speaker system in the bed and on chair so she can play music for her friends when they come to hang. She likes to have people over as much as possible. She could chat with her friends all day – which is why when she isn't with them she can still use her [high-...] screen to chat with them all, at once if she wants to, equipped to show up to six different full-sized holo-chat windows! If anyone can have six conversations going on, it's Gemma!
Powers and Abilities[]
Starling Physiology[]
Being a Starling, Gemma possesses all of the natural traits that the species has.
- Wish Energy Manipulation - Gemma harnesses positive wish energy for most of her abilities.
- Energy Blasts - As displayed in The Power of Twelve, wish energy can be used to fire streams, bursts, orbs, and waves of offensive power against opponents.
- Force Fields - Demonstrated in the above special, Gemma can conjure shields as defense.
- Extended Lifespan - In Scarlet Discovers True Strength, it’s confirmed that Starlings can live for thousands of years, as Mira’s grandmother is over thousands of years old. Before that, in Leona's Unlucky Mission it was hinted that a few decades wasn’t too long in comparison to Starling lifespans. However, they do not have eternal youth, as Professor Elara Ursa is stated to be among one of the oldest wish granters and has clearly aged in a similar manner to a wishling elder.
- Disease Immunity - In Scarlet Discovers True Strength, it states that the wish energy surrounding Starlings keeps them from contracting illnesses.
- Superhuman Knowledge - In Leona's Unlucky Mission, Starlings are shown to be nigh-perfect at mathematics from birth. Astra's Mixed-Up Mission also implies that Starlings are the same way towards towards literature and similar subjects such as language and grammar.
Wish Mission Signature Powers[]
The Star Darlings each gain a power that is meant to assist with carrying out their wish missions. It is unknown if this is exclusive to them, or if they only work on Wishworld, as Adora uses hers to heal Vega in the The Power of Twelve.
- Rewinding Time - Gemma uses this power in Gemma and the Ultimate Standoff.
Trivia[]
