I just had a lot of free time and made this for fun. I think it turned out cute, even if I didn’t get the art style completely right. :)

The butterfly perched on her finger is supposed to be one of the ones that appear near the end of the book when Ophelia and Scarlet help Arden face her fear of butterflies. I tried to think of a cool butterfly-themed title for the book cover to go along with it but I was plumb out of ideas.

(Also- I know Ophelia is supposed to be yellow and orange, but the only reference I could find for her was that one pic Scarlet pulled up in the webseries. :p Maybe I’ll make a properly colored version later.)

Ophelia and Cassie simultaneously praying that they won’t get chosen by the latest wish orb. I imagine this one is Leona’s.

I really think that, if the writers had just allowed it, Ophelia could’ve really been good friends with some of the other Star Darlings- particularly Cassie. They probably could’ve bonded over their mutual fear of being chosen for a wish mission, and Cassie could’ve helped Ophelia understand more about Wishworld.

It's stated repeatedly throughout the books that Starlings are born with innate math skills. This is seen repeatedly throughout the books. But if Starlings are born with these skills, then why does Astral Accounting exist? It's literally a math class! Why is it necessary if Starlings are born with these skills?

All this makes me think that the whole statement that starlings are born with innate math and literacy skills is kind of a fib. It wouldn't be a total lie because if it was then it would have no reason to prevail over all these books.

So I propose a theory. I think that a Starling's math skills functions much like our Immune System. Let me explain.

Basically, the Immune System has two parts, the Innate and Adaptive Immune System. You are born with the Innate Immune System, much like starlings are born with their math skills. It contains general defenses that don't specialize but is instead designed to be as widely effective as possible. The Adaptive system on the other hand needs to be refined over time. It contains specialized defenses against every possible enemy that could ever emerge in the past, present, and future. It mainly makes the innate immune system stronger. (Note: that this is highly simplified and if you want to learn more then I recommend Immune by Phillip Dettmer)

So what does that mean for my theory. I think that a Starling's math skills functions much like the immune system. My theory goes as follows:

A starling has two sets of math skills, their Innate and adaptive math skills. A Starling is born with their Innate math skills. These include simple things like counting, adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, place value, measurement, simple geometry, and a basic understanding of time. To test if a starling has these skills, math is reviewed at home and school until 1st grade and is taught at up to and including the wishling sixth grade level.

In 9th grade of first year of starling academy, schools start refining a starling's adaptive math skills. Unlike the Innate math skills, a starling is not born with these and has to actually learn them from scratch. These include things like, advance geometry, algebra, probability, etc. But like a muscle it gets better overtime and by the time a starling graduates, they will have perfect math skills and unlike our immune system, a starling's math skills don't decline with age.

In the franchise, we never get any hint on what starlings believe in terms of religion. We know a bit about their culture, but we know nothing about what they believe. In our world, religion developed to motivate people to do good in society. So as starlings developed, religion would naturally develop as a way to motivate starlings to be good.

The eastern continent has all the cannon locations.
